Early Life and Background

Bruno Mars, born Peter Gene Hernandez on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii, hails from a richly diverse musical family. His father, Peter Hernandez, is of Puerto Rican and Ashkenazi Jewish descent, while his mother, Bernadette San Pedro Bayot, was a Filipina singer and hula dancer. Growing up in Waikiki, Mars was immersed in music from a young age, performing in his family's band, The Love Notes, and gaining recognition for his Elvis Presley impersonations. He graduated from President Theodore Roosevelt High School in 2003 and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. 

Musical Career

Mars began his career as a songwriter and producer, co-founding the production team The Smeezingtons. He gained initial fame by providing vocals for B.o.B's "Nothin' on You" and Travie McCoy's "Billionaire." His debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010), featured hits like "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade," both reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. His second album, Unorthodox Jukebox (2012), included chart-toppers like "Locked Out of Heaven" and "When I Was Your Man." In 2014, Mars collaborated with Mark Ronson on "Uptown Funk," a global hit that topped charts worldwide. 

His third album, 24K Magic (2016), showcased a blend of R&B, funk, and pop, earning him seven Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. In 2021, Mars teamed up with Anderson .Paak to form Silk Sonic, releasing the critically acclaimed album An Evening with Silk Sonic. 

Recent Collaborations and Achievements

In 2024, Mars collaborated with Lady Gaga on "Die With a Smile" and with BLACKPINK's Rosé on "APT.," both achieving significant streaming success. "Die With a Smile" became the top-streamed song on Spotify for 148 non-consecutive days, while "APT." reached number one in South Korea and Japan. These collaborations contributed to Mars becoming Spotify's most-streamed artist in late 2024. 

Personal Life

Mars was in a long-term relationship with model Jessica Caban from 2011 until their reported split in 2023. He has a close-knit family, with his brother, Eric Hernandez, serving as the drummer for his band, The Hooligans. Mars's mother, Bernadette, passed away in 2013 due to a brain aneurysm, a loss that deeply affected him.
